David is a builder of muzzleloading rifles and single barrel smoothbores. David was apprentice to Ted Fellowes and received Gunmaker of the Year in 2001 from the Washington Historical Gunmaker's Guild. David has made 155 pieces as of February 2006. He became a full-time gunmaker in 1985 after retirement.

David is a member of multiple muzzleloading and rifle organizations. He visits schools giving presentations on the Oregon Trail, Colonial Life and Washington state history. He serves on the Washington Historical Gunmaker's Guild Steering Committee and as a lecturer and instructor.
