Product Description

Fine original flintlock pistol by Stephen Sandwell, London, circa 1766 to 1781. 16 bore, 9” round and partially swamped brass barrel is marked “SANDWELL MINORIES LONDON” with elaborate geometric and shell finial, carrying London proof marks and crowned “SS” Sandwell touch. Round face lock with chip border and bridled pan. Silver trigger guard with London proofs circa 1759 has floral engraving on bow, and an acorn finial. Classic stand of arms silver sideplate with flags, cannon, and armor. Wrist nicely carved with a raised shell motif. Silver wrist escutcheon and grotesque buttcap. Some well executed, wood replacement at muzzle, along with scattered handling marks and impressions. Mechanically fine but safety does not engage. A very handsome pistol from the Revolutionary War period, and a type often favored by American officers.
