Just completed , I pattern this lightweight NC Mountain Rifle by an original survivor belonging to the Ward family. The original was marked Hughes on the side plate off flat. The trigger guard was a little fancier than the usual Robert Hughes rifles and they’re usually block letter stamped. The butt plate was the usual Robert Hughes diamond shaped.
.50 caliber 42 ” swamped A-weight barrel (yes A not B)
Davis trigger set
L&R classic lock
All iron trimmed
Inlays are German silver
Poured pewter nose cap
Nicely line carved
The handmade patch box operates on a cam with a hidden flat spring, (so you don’t have the usual ugly, catch your shirt latch spring )
There’s a vent pick under the cheek piece attached with 2 staples
The stock is grade 5 plus hard maple and it’s got more curl than pictures show
The stain is homemade giving a bourbon color with a mahogany hue then oiled with danish and Tung oil
Stainless vent liner
A deer would be proud to be hunted with this lightweight mountain rifle weighing just under 6 pounds
Thank you for taking the time to look and consider my work
