This beautiful horn has a caramel colored base. This makes the horn translucent when held up to a light source, even after the faux tortoise shell staining was applied.
Applied stain spots or faux tortoise shell staining was a popular technique used in the 18th and 19th centuries to decorate cow horn. The technique appears on many objects made from cow horn, not just on powder horns.
This horn features a tapered octagon spout that has some chip carving applied. It measures, around the outside curve, about 14”. The turned cherry base plug has been hollowed inside to reduce weight and increase powder capacity. It is held in place with wooden square shoe pegs.

Both Jeff and Shelly are reenactors who began by creating items for themselves. They attend many living history events a year. In their free time they piddle around their farm where they make wines, ales, and fill their pantry with home-canned items. They can be found hunting, trapping , and fishing. Sometimes, they incorporate their trophies in their custom work.
