Henry Deringer Sr. worked in Easton, PA and then moved to Philadelphia and worked as a civilian gunsmith as well as fulfilling government conracts for military guns. This example has a bit more ornamentation than his usual rifles. The 43.5″ smoothbore barrel is about .54 cal and is stamped “H. Deringer Philada”. The lock is marked “JJ Henry Boulton” but is a replacement. The lockplate has been altered to more closely fit the mortise. A very nice pattern of brass inlay work appears in front of the toe plate.

There is a minor wood replacement at the toe. The lock bolt plate is a replacement but is nicely engraved in an appropriate pattern. Other than the replacements the rifle has wonderful surface quality, finish, and above average curly maple.

This rifle probably originated in or near Winchester, Virginia and was likely the work of a gunsmith associated with Simon Lauck or John Haymaker. The patchbox, trigger guard, cheek piece inlay, and side plate are in the Winchester style as well as the forestock molding. Architecturally it relates more to Hampshire County, (now) West Virginia and may have been restocked there. It has seen a lot of use but retains its original lock; a very good reconversion. The rifled barrel is 43.5 inches and about .50 cal. indicating an early period.

The rifle is in fair condition with old untouched surfaces. There is a strip of wood replaced on both sides of the forestock near the fore end cap and a piece replaced in front of the lock; all of which could be blended in a little better. The tang on the rear ramrod pipe is missing. “S N” probably apprenticed in Winchester with Haymaker or Lauck or may have been a journeyman there. This is a nicely decorated rifle from the flintlock period with old surfaces.

This is a museum quality high end 16ga. percussion shotgun with 29″ barrels. This was crafted probably between the 1840’s and 1870’s for a very wealthy individual. The shotgun appears to be possibly unfired. The Locks,Triggers, Bores,Stock, Finish are magnificent. Beautiful wood carving, metal engraving with Gold inlays all show true old world craftsmanship. Very high art.
A.J. Leclere held a patent on making Damascus Barrels. The writing on the top of the barrel in gold is German lettering but French wording. In English we would probably say Leclere Superfine Damascus.
On the bottom of the barrels there are the initials AJL, the number 44 and what looks like a tiny E in a partial circle. There is also the tiny number 678 with a little mark of some kind following it. I have not tried to remove the locks.
My thinking is this might have come back as a was trophy after WWII or maybe later by one of the occupation forces after the war. Just a guess of course. I have plenty of more pictures but I have maxed out what I can show on this platform. Contact me for additional pictures. I’m selling this for an estate and if I still have it in August I will have it on my table at the CLA show in Lexington. The sales price doesn’t include shipping. If you have questions I can be reached at 316-788-9710.
